Albert Ludwig was many things in his long life. He died Saturday at the age of
“Albert in many ways was a renaissance man,” longtime friend Frances Wright said Thursday.
“He served his country with distinction in many ways, both during war and peacetime,” Wright said of her friend of nearly four decades.
Ludwig spent 16 years in the Alberta legislature as a Social Credit MLA from to , including a stint as minister of public works from to
As Wright pointed out, he survived the Peter Lougheed Tory sweep of the province in and was one of the few Socreds re-elected.
Lougheed thought so highly of Ludwig, he later appointed him a provincial court judge, where he served from to his retirement in , she noted.

But even in retirement from his legal career, Ludwig remained active, running in elections at all levels of government until
He was also physically active, Wright said.
“He went skydiving on his . . . 80th and 85th birthdays,” she said. “He was up for challenges.”
Ludwig was born in Melfort, Sask., on Nov. 14, , but grew up on his family’s farm near Rycroft, Alta.
He enlisted in the military in and was shot down over France on June 13,
He was captured by the Germans a little more than a month later and was taken to a POW camp, where he and others were liberated by the Russian Red Army on April 21,
A celebration of Ludwig’s life will be held March 1, at McInnis & Holloway, Elbow Dr. S.W.
