Hernando Alvarez


Hernando was born in Bogota, Colombia. In 1996 he moved to London. He wrote for various magazines and newspapers while doing a Masters in History at the London School of Economics. In 2000 he joined the Latin American Section of the BBC World Service, where he is now the current affairs editor.


Ethirajan Anbarasan


Ethirajan Anbarasan, works as a radio/online producer for the BBC Tamil Service. He regularly writes for BBC News Online on South Asian issues. Prior to joining the BBC, he has worked for the UNESCO in Paris.

Olga Betko


Olga Betko studied Journalism in Moscow, and then worked as a print journalist in Kiev. In 1995 she completed an MA course in International Journalism at City University, London, and joined the BBC in 1996. She is now a producer for the Ukrainian Service.

Safaa Faisal is a producer and presenter with the BBC Arabic Service. Since joining the service in 1995, Safaa's most rewarding project was when she produced and presented 'A school for Girls'. In this programme listeners heard the voices of young Arab women in remote, underdeveloped regions for the first time.

Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Bruno joined the BBC in 2001. He has covered events as diverse as the Russian Presidential elections and the paving of a controversial road that crosses the Brazilian rain forest.

Dima Hamdan


As a journalist in Jordan, Dima wrote for the Jordan Times, Al Hayat and the Middle East Times. Dima came to the BBC in 2002. She chose the story behind 'Playing for Palestine' because it shows the human side of Palestinians. Most people forget that besides the daily conflict with the Israelis, Palestinians are struggling to have a normal life.

Rupa Jha


Rupa started working with BBC Hindi in 2001 in London but is now based in Delhi. Since the beginning of her career her field of interest has been social and human interest stories with a political angle. Rupa is also a professional Indian classical dancer and wishes she could do this full time, but, she says, art doesn?t pay much in India.

Irena Luto


Irena has worked as a journalist since 1998. But this wasn't her first love. Originally, she wanted to be an actress. 'Making programmes and having the audience in the heart of everything we do in this job is the closest I can get.' She has been working for the Albanian Section as a producer since 2002.

Boris Maksimov


Boris has been with the BBC since 1996. What interests Boris most are stories that expand upon the human condition. He says, 'People's 'veneer' may by exotic, but we are all in it together, and we share much, much more than we usually suspect.'

Mariam Omar


Mariam Omar joined BBC's Swahili Service early in 1998 as a radio producer. Before that she worked for KBC, the state owned media organisation in Kenya.

Ilana Rehavia


While in her native Sao Paulo, Ilana worked for newspapers, TV and the biggest news radio station in the country. She did everything - from producing live programmes to reporting the traffic from a helicopter. She has lived in the UK since 2001. From a personal perspective, Ilana has long been interested in how women relate to their body image.

Irini Roumboglou


Irini's first degree was in Media, she then did a Masters in Philosophy of Science and then another in Modern History. She worked for the Greek Service for seven years and has also worked for the World Desk for BBC News Online and the World Service's Arts Unit. She has lived in Greece, France and UK.

Shivani Sharma

Before Shivani came to the BBC in 2003, she was a TV news presenter. The BBC's Hindi service has been her first experience with radio. She says: 'As a child I remember listening to stories about the Vietnam War from my grandfather who was posted in Hanoi. It was those anecdotes which helped me realise my passion for journalism.'

Navin Singh Khadka

Navin is a producer with the BBC's Nepali Service. He has worked with print and electronic media in Kathmandu and has reported from and travelled extensively across Nepal, especially in the trans Himalayan region.

Anca Toader


Anca has a degree in Computing, but decided to embrace a career in journalism after the fall of Communism in Romania. She was head of the state TV news department with a mandate to reform it into a public service, but resigned in protest because of political interference. Since then she been working as a producer for the BBC's Romanian Service.
