Biography of Vivian Liberto

Vivian Dorraine Liberto Cash Distin, the wife of renowned country musician Johnny Cash, was born in San Antonio, Texas. She came from a family of an Italian immigrant father, Thomas Liberto, who worked as an insurance agent and also served as the director of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. From a young age, Vivian helped her family prepare for shows in local clubs and occasionally even performed her own magic tricks. However, her father did not consider it a suitable career for his daughter and she eventually enrolled in St. Mary's Catholic School for girls, a religious school.

Meeting Johnny Cash and Their Love Story

In July 1951, seventeen-year-old Vivian accidentally met Johnny Cash in San Antonio, where he was serving in the US Air Force. Just a few days after their first encounter on a bench, the words "Johnny loves Vivian" appeared. She later referred to this moment as the "one thing we should not have done." Shortly after their meeting, Johnny was deployed on a mission to Germany and several other European countries for three years. During their time apart, the young couple exchanged over 10,000 letters, which were later published in the book "I Walked The Line," co-authored by Vivian and Ann Sharpsteen.

In July 1953, Cash retired from the Air Force, and a few weeks later, they began living together in Memphis, Tennessee. They got married on August 7, 1954, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in San Antonio. After the wedding, Cash worked simultaneously at a home appliance sales company on a commission basis and pursued a career as a radio DJ. Unfortunately, none of his clients could afford to buy enough appliances to cover his training and living expenses. In late 1954, Vivian wrote in her diary, "We were rich in that we loved each other. But still, every morning we woke up not knowing where the next dollar would come from."

Supporting Johnny Cash's Music Career

However, a few weeks later, Johnny's brother introduced him to Marshall Grant and Luther Perkins. The young people were so passionate about playing country music and performing in local bars that they formed a group. Vivian, always supportive of her husband, noted in her diary that their songs and musical talent were inspiring. At the same time, Johnny's passion for a career as a DJ diminished and eventually died out. Everyone realized that selling appliances and working in radio were not what he wanted to do with his life.

Johnny's music career truly took off after signing a contract with Sun Records, and he and Vivian no longer had to live in poverty. Within a short period, Johnny became one of the most significant figures in the country music genre. During their years together, they had four daughters: Rosanne, Kathleen, Cindy, and Tara.

Difficulties and Separation

After a few years in his career, Johnny began struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. They moved to Casitas Springs, California, where they lived in their friends' house near a small lake, trying to avoid the crowds of fans waiting for them on the streets. Vivian believed that the quiet place would calm Johnny, but she was mistaken. In August 1966, they officially divorced, and all four daughters remained with Vivian, who hoped that the decision would make Johnny reconsider his family commitments rather than focusing solely on his career. Johnny, however, believed it was already too late.

Two years later, Vivian married a police officer in Las Vegas and eventually moved to Ventura. She passed away on May 24, 2005, at the age of 71, after battling lung cancer in a hospital in Ventura. In 2007, her autobiographical book about her life with the American country music legend, titled "I Walked the Line: My Life with Johnny," was published.
