Biography of Myroslav Skoryk
Myroslav Skoryk is a Ukrainian composer and musicologist, a People's Artist of Ukraine. He is a laureate of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine and a corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of Ukraine. Skoryk is also a professor, candidate of art studies, head of the Composition Department at the N.V. Lysenko Lviv National Music Academy, head of the Lviv branch of the Union of Composers of Ukraine, and secretary of the Union of Composers of Ukraine. He is the great-nephew of the famous Ukrainian opera singer Solomiya Krushelnytska. Skoryk was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine in He was born on July 13, , in Lviv.
Early Life and Education
Skoryk comes from an intellectual family, as his grandmother's sister is the renowned Ukrainian opera singer Solomiya Krushelnytska. In , he began his music education at the Lviv Music School. However, in , Skoryk's family was repressed and exiled to Siberia. After the death of Joseph Stalin, the family returned to Lviv, where Skoryk studied at the Lviv State Conservatory (now the N.V. Lysenko Lviv National Music Academy) from to He was under the guidance of professors Stanyslav Lyudkevych, Roman Simovych, and Adam Sołtys (composition class of A. Sołtys and history and theory of music class of S. Lyudkevych).
After graduating from the Lviv Conservatory in , Skoryk continued his studies at the Moscow Conservatory in Dmitry Kabalevsky's class. He completed his postgraduate studies in From to the late s, he taught composition at the Kiev Conservatory. Skoryk also spent a significant amount of time working in the United States and Australia before returning to Ukraine in the late s.
Career and Achievements
Since , Skoryk has been the head of the Department of Ukrainian Music History at the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine. In , he became the artistic director of the "KyivMusicFest" festival. In , Skoryk served as the head of the jury for the "Chervona Ruta" festival. From , he became the co-chairman of the National Union of Composers of Ukraine alongside Evhen Stankovych.
Skoryk's compositions are regularly performed in Ukraine, other former USSR countries, as well as Germany, France, Austria, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia. He often performs as a conductor and pianist, interpreting his own works. Skoryk's style continues the traditions of the Lviv compositional school, which is organically connected to various primary genres. He extensively incorporates Ukrainian, particularly Carpathian, folk music, Lviv urban and salon music, as well as contemporary popular music, notably jazz.
