Early Life and Career

Andry Rajoelina was born into a wealthy military family and rose to prominence as a nightclub DJ and bar owner. His entrepreneurial success, particularly the founding of his radio station "Viva Radio," earned him the nickname "TGV," after the French high-speed train.

Political Ambitions and Election as Mayor

Inspired by the popularity of his youth movement, TGV (Tanora malaGasy Vonona), Rajoelina entered politics, running for mayor of Antananarivo. Despite facing stiff competition, he was elected with a significant majority in December 2007.

Conflict with President Ravalomanana

Tensions between Rajoelina and then-President Marc Ravalomanana escalated following his election. The closure of Rajoelina's television station and his subsequent declaration that he would take over national affairs sparked further conflict.

Military Intervention and Assumption of Power

On February 3, 2009, Rajoelina was removed from his mayoral position for allegedly inciting unrest. However, military forces backed his claims, and on March 18, Ravalomanana resigned, paving the way for Rajoelina to assume power as interim president.
